SUPER BOWL SCRATCH TOURNAMENT
COMMUNITY LANES
MOBERLY, MISSOURI
FEBRUARY 3, 2008

RESULTS

We had a great field of 59 players bowl the 8 game, scratch event with 12 going to the pay window on the tournament proper, while countless others cashed big in side pots and brackets.

We had a terrific qualifying field with many lead changes throughout the day leading up to our "old school", top 5 stepladder finals. The top qualifier was Tom Patton with 1811 (226.3avg.), followed by Mark Burkenbine 1779 (222.3), Pat Stumbaugh 1778 (222.25), Dallas Baldridge 1760 (220.0), and James Propst 1759 (219.8). The first match pitted James Propst versus Dallas Baldridge with Prost winning 200-195 in a great match.  Match 2 saw James go up against Pat Stumbaugh.  Again we witnessed an exciting match coming down to the 10th frame, this time with Stumbaugh prevailing 202-190.  Match 3, the lanes appeared to be brutal after all the lineage throughout the day.  After several opens by both competitors, they settled down and still bowled a match that was not decided until the 10th.  Again, Stumbaugh won with a score of 193 versus Burkrnbine's 179.  Qualifying leader Tom Patton stepped up to the lanes for the Championship Match with the lanes looking extremely tough after game 3.  However, Patton starts off with a 6-bagger and looks to be automatic.  Not giving in, however, Stumbaugh starts off with a double, followed by spare - strike - spare.  It looked like the outcome was final.  As we all know, bowling is unpredictable and suddenly Pattons' carry disappears and Stumbaugh catches fire.  Patton finishes the game first and on his first ball in the 10th, leaves a ten-pin and has a messenger hit it, but not fall down.  Patton spares and crushes the hole for 247.  Meanwhile, Stumbaugh is entering the tenth on a 4-bagger (Hambone? I don't think so!).  If Stumbaugh can go Strike - 9 spare, we have a tie, or if he goes double in the tenth for a 6 - bagger, Stumbaugh becomes the SuperBowl Champ.  He steadied himself superbly and made a great shot, but left a light, but shaky ten-pin that could have fell.  He then spares and flushes a strike for a 238.  Wow, what a finish that provided excitement for many of the tournament participants who stayed around and for the incoming league bowlers.  Having a great crowd to witness the roll-off provided much excitement and an electric atmosphere and the bowlers performed magnificent under the pressure.  Great job by all and Congratulations to Tom Patton, Champion, and Pat Stumbaugh, Runner-up, for an outstanding showing throughout the whole day!

$2,355 was paid out from the Tournament prize fund and including all side action, an astounding $7,073 was paid out for the day.  Along with high game pots, series pots, eliminators, etc. we had 95 brackets spread out to give all players a chance to share in the big money.  One final side note, out of 59 bowlers, 25 averaged 200 or better, 12 averaged 210 or better, and 4 averaged 220 plus.

Thanks to everyone for making this a premier event!
